"First Insurance Co. of HI. just got too expensive. Our Homeowner's insurance increased $300-$600 annually. I did not understand why. When I spoke to the (broker) GEICO agent, they got me something cheaper with another insurance company, but I could not make the payment in time. Since I didn't meet the deadline, the premium went up. After a month of dealing with GEICO I decided to go with someone local, right here in Kamuela, my hometown. I was tired of dealing with the impersonal, non-compassionate sales people at GEICO and a call center in who knows where!? The State Farm agent who helped us in Kamuela was Chris Simmons. To speak with someone on the same island who wanted to meet with us in person was such a relief! Chris answered my questions about a homeowner's policy- What is a Dwelling Extension? What is a deductible? Once the value of the home was established, he helped me understand the amount of coverage I should have in case the home were destroyed. Finally, he helped us save money by covering our automobiles, too. I am very thankful that there's a State Farm office in Kamuela and that the agent, Chris, took the time to meet with us and answer our questions. "My wife and I recently retired and moved from California to South Kohala. I initially tried to find insurance for our condominium unit through direct dealings with well-known national carriers we recently used in California. It quickly became apparent that the national carriers had not committed to serving the islands as they do on the mainland. For instance, their centralized agent call centers were often unavailable because of the time differences, and we had a difficult time linking up with local representatives that seemed to take calls on a rotating basis. Even more importantly, their policies did not meet our HOA’s requirements; so, we had to look elsewhere. My initial contact was with Robert Ragasa who listened carefully, assessed our needs and suggested appropriate policies at competitive rates. Having a designated local agency made all the difference. We now know that Cheryl and Robert will be available in real time, know us personally and give us sound advice in a timely way. As our comfort levels increased, we asked Cheryl and Robert to take over our automobile and even Medicare supplement plans (which I was surprised State Farm makes available).
